In 2024, we traveled in the United States throughout the South-East: the cradle of the blues, bluegrass, country (and soul, rock ’n’ roll, country-rock etc ;-). The numerous talents and live performances there, inspired me - as well as let me down quite a bit. Much is alike; formula songs following simple formats. ‘Well, heck y’all, I can do that too!’, I thought. And since I am from the South in Holland, I myself ám a Southern Man, just as every guy or gal with a guitar over there. Here will follow the results - as soon as I have recorded them :-). Some older songs fit here as well, enjoy.

Note: for some songs I have used Sound ID Voice AI: my voice is transformed with an AI-filter. Sounds better that way... When so, the ‘singer’ is mentioned in the italics.

Tale of tears I was moved by Arthur Japin’s book The Surrender about the Parker family of colonists in the mid-19th century. In the USA I found another book, The Empire of the Summer Moon, about the same story but in a wider perspective. Quanah Parker was the last Comanche chief. Here’s my version of his story. Country - feat. Tyler AI

Gotta get me a gal A cowboy living without women for longer periods of time could easily turn to fellow cowboys or even animals. A topic not often heard of in country songs - but here’s one though :-). Tex Mex

Out of the blue A darker song, about being unexpectedly rescued by a new love. And an attempt to add steel guitar :-). Blues - feat. Tyler AI

Room with a view Criticizing the format of many contemporary country songs - and at the same time using that in here. Country

Blondbeard Not a country song, but it fits in the journey: we passed Tybee Island and Savannah, the homes of pirates like Blackbeard. There are more infamous beards - but Blondbeard never made it to the pirates top... This songs explains why, and some day, a choir of drunken sailors should help completing it :-). Folk - feat. Tyler AI

Life sorta kinda happened A country song in the style of Boy named Sue. With five important life lessons; the regrets that people worldwide have, when looking back on their lives. Country / Tex Mex

Happy with a song The world has room for everybody, to play his or her role. About being satisfied with a simple life, an often recurring theme in Southern songs. My first use of the ukelele - as well as trying to get a country violin in. That didn’t work too well :-) Country / Bluegrass

Pardon my French Some French in this song is pronounced American and vice-versa, changing meanings. The music is inspired on what guitar guru Paul Davids considers the best blues chord sequence ever and the classic song ‘16 tons’. Blues .

On the run Picture a cowboy on his horse, on the highway, pursued by bountyhunters in a pick-up truck. About the outlaw type they are proud of. Country

Cruisin’ on the roundabout Driving in circles, not taking an exit... Funny, with long chorusses and little serious content. But hey, who cares, ‘cause I am with you. Country

Above Maslow’s piramid Everything in life is a choice these days. Even one’s gender - what is not naturally understood by people who have to deal with more basic problems in life. Americana

Not used to it yet As you get older, you naturally get into the zone of losing people around you. That sucks. Americana
